The Changing Education Group is committed to inspiring future leaders
Created by founders Matthew Hodgkinson and Stephen Hackney in 2008
The Changing Education Group is committed to inspiring future leaders...
..by giving students a real insight into the various industries and career pathways available to them.
We achieve this by helping schools and colleges provide purposeful, planned, safe work experiences and broader career opportunities. We are passionate about work-based learning and understand the enormous leap many students struggle to make from the classroom to the workplace.
We appreciate how difficult it is for a busy educator to find and oversee appropriate, safe, and meaningful work experiences for large cohorts of learners. Gatsby, OFSTED, qualifications, logistics, risk management, and employer engagement make work experience programmes enormously time-consuming and logistically complex.
Many institutions cannot provide a robust delivery model that addresses each in detail. Here at The Changing Education Group, we have blended our two passions – education and technology – to build a solution.
We believe the following four principles must be in place to achieve success
A robust delivery model
A web platform for educators
A mobile app to enable learners
A portal for employers to access work placement activity
So, this business has been built on a straightforward principle:
The more students can spend time in a work environment, the better, not just for the experience it brings but also for the discipline it requires
If you're not a teacher, you're probably beginning to understand quite what an undertaking this is, which is where the Changing Education team comes in. We provide a range of work-related learning products and services to allow schools, colleges, training providers, and universities to plan, deliver and review work-related learning and careers programmes. We do this in two ways; we provide the tools, i.e. the software to get the job done yourself, or through our brokerage service, where we do all the legwork for you. This means brokering all those work experience opportunities with employers in your area to your students, completing risk management, and providing lots of data for all those who need to see it.
Providing so much experience for many students in this day and age isn't easy
It means:
Networking with vast numbers of employers to offer opportunities
Arranging the logistics is quite different for an in-person than a virtual work experience.
Ensuring that regulations and benchmarks are met, including Ofsted and Gatsby
Knowing where everyone is at all times and recording with reporting on results and performance
We help schools and colleges provide purposeful, planned, safe work experiences and broader career opportunities. We are passionate about work-based learning and understand the enormous leap many students struggle to make from the classroom to the workplace. We have blended our two passions – education and technology – to build the answer.
We do it by combining our passion for
Education in its broadest sense
Local communities and the importance of bringing young people into the workplace
Technology - and the enormous amount of time and hassle it can save
Innovation. We constantly look to do things differently and better

Hello. My name’s Scott. I lived in Southampton and joined Changing Education in February 2023 as a Sales Executive. Since leaving Oxford Brookes University in 2014 with a 2:1 in Business and Management, I have held roles in business development and account management in the EdTech industry. I started at School Business Services and was with them for eight years before moving to Applicant. What I love most about the role is the variety of people/schools I speak to daily and the knowledge I gain from these conversations.
In my personal life, I am a BIG Arsenal fan and will pretty much watch any sport that’s going on. I keep fit by going to the gym and running for the Southampton Athletic club six days a week. Usually, I’ll run around 70 miles a week. When the weather is nice, I play golf when I can, albeit very poorly! At home, I have two cats, one black and one ginger, continually causing mischief.

My background in theatre and design has equipped me with a diverse skill set and fostered my creativity, allowing me to approach marketing with a unique perspective.
Being neurodivergent, my journey to finding the right career path hasn’t been a conventional one, but that unique perspective is what further fuels my creativity and determination. One of the things that excites me the most about my role and being part of Changing Education is the opportunity to make a difference. If I can be a voice for others like me, to help them find their way and pursue their passions, I will feel like I’ve truly fulfilled my role.
I’m a massive design and creative marketing nerd with a deep love for all things retro. Outside of work, You’ll often find me engrossed in creating art, watching video after video on retro design, or scouring charity shops for the next addition to my vintage toy collection. I also may or may not have a soft spot for tacky 80’s jumpers.

As a Customer Success Executive, my main focus is maintaining excellent relationships with our new and existing clients. The key responsibilities include finding opportunities for students to enhance their skills, giving them a stepping ladder to their careers, and ensuring all the employer’s health and safety checks are in place. Knowing I have contributed to helping students find successful placements to shape their future gives me great satisfaction and motivates me.
I have a finance background and extensive experience working in the education sector. Due to this, I understand the struggles and pressures children of today have when trying to figure out their career path, and I am so pleased to be able to help through my role at Changing Education. During my time off, I find it highly therapeutic to paint/sketch or practice henna art. I am also a big foodie and love baking for my friends and Family; always happy to be on the receiving end too.

I have worked with Young people in several roles over the last 20 years. High points have included time as a Hospital Youth worker, supporting Young People onwards and in Accidents and Emergencies, which at times could be pretty demanding but rewarding. I was also responsible for developing community-based outreach centres, where Careers, Advice and Guidance Workers would work with young people at the grass-roots level.
One aspect of being part of the Changing Education Family is that I enjoy the variety of ways I can support young people, either through weekly appointments in school or virtually, so that distance is no barrier. I have learnt to be more in tune with social media, so I can regularly share my thoughts and ideas on Linkedin.
Outside of Work, I enjoy watching most sports, and as I originally come from Derbyshire, I love being in the countryside and have supported Derby County F.C. for years, and one of my all-time favourite films is “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

After leaving College, I worked in Engineering for several years before deciding on a complete change of direction and leaving employment to study for a Degree at Nottingham Trent University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance. Since then, I have delivered careers guidance and assisted with the delivery of work experience and the design of careers programmes in schools, 6th forms and Colleges across England before returning home to Cheshire, where I currently deliver guidance in Cheshire and North Staffordshire. Whilst working, I gained the Post Graduate Diploma in career education.
When I began delivering guidance, I was passionate about helping young people see the importance of engaging in the decision and planning process. How they can achieve what they want, this passion has only grown over time. I’m increasingly convinced of the part that a well-organised work experience programme can play in raising a young person’s aspirations and helping with motivation.
Away from Work, I enjoy my Family, Dancing, attending the Gym, Pilates and baking Cakes for friends and Family.

I’m Mike, Father to a four-year-old boy and a full-stack software developer based in Essex.
I spend my free time doing Home DIY and having fun with my Family.
In my previous role, I was responsible for building and maintaining order management software for one of the leading NHS medical suppliers. Said software helped them increase their turnover by several million pounds per annum without needing to employ additional staff, but most importantly, the staff loved using it! I hope to bring the skills and expertise learnt in my previous role to Changing Education and with the development team to make some changes to the existing software, starting with how teachers use connect.

What others say about us
Recruitment is becoming taxing. Its time consuming and expensive. Supporting work placements has given us access to a diverse pipeline of talent.
The students wanted to be here, and they did a great job with our social media posts. So I can’t wait for our next student.
We all remember our work experience. It was great to give back and see someone start their journey.
We have been supporting Work Experience students for years. If we don’t, who will?
We were sceptical, to begin with, but we had a great experience, and we found our next apprentice.
Our student did everything from making the tea to designing a social media outreach campaign – wow! When can we host again?
Providing Work Experience allowed our team to see things from a different perspective
The process was simple, and all the paperwork was taken care of. What more could be asked for?
We have recognised the skills shortage in our industry, and providing work experience allows us to tackle this head-on.

Are there any costs associated with providing Work Experience?
Only your time. PPE or any other items needed for work experience will be up to the student to provide. You don’t need to upgrade your insurance.
Do I need to complete a Risk Assessment?
If you have a young person's risk assessment in place, there is no need to complete another. If you don't, we can quickly complete one for you.
Do I need Insurance?
Your existing employers' liability insurance policy will cover work placements provided your insurer is a member of the Association of British Insurers or Lloyds, so you don't need to obtain any additional employer's liability insurance if you take on work experience students. The ABI website confirms this.
What jobs will the student be expected to do?
Work experience students are treated the same as your employees. If you are happy with the student's competence to complete tasks, they can. You can also give them training for specific tasks. When you induct students, explain the risks and how they are controlled, checking that they understand.
How will I be supported?
We will support you at every stage. We send you a risk assessment template to use if you need it, and we are always available via email or telephone.
Will the student be prepared?
Yes. Students are educated beforehand in school, and we share resources with them to help them understand the behaviours and requirements in the workplace.
Will I be able to interview the student first?
Yes. Students are required to contact you for an introduction. At this meeting, you can have a conversation with the student and evaluate their suitability for your business.
How long will the placement last?
Work experience placements between 5 and 10 working days. You and the student will agree on the hours of work.
Can I provide feedback?
Absolutely. On the penultimate day of placement, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback. We encourage you to do this, as feedback is shared with the school.
How do I cancel a placement?
If your circumstances change, and you are no longer able to offer a placement, please get in touch with us on 01625 837309 or email us at workexperience@changingeducation.co.uk
Do I have to pay the student a wage?
Work experience is unpaid for students.
Do I need to provide or complete a DBS?
The Government is cutting the red tape that can sometimes get in your way when working with young people: You do not need to carry out an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Services (formerly CRB) check on members of your staff supervising young people aged 16-17. If an education provider requested a DBS check for this group, you would be entitled to refuse.
I have been told that students need a CSCS card to work on building sites, so work experience isn’t possible?
Work experience students do not need a CSCS card. The CITB has stopped this because it creates unnecessary barriers restricting student access to construction sites. CSCS does not issue cards to those on work experience placements. “Students perform a non-construction-related activity, and it is the responsibility of the site management team to ensure they remain safe at all times.”
Each site will operate differently, so it is up to the employer to keep those on work placements safe. This often includes the delivery of a site induction highlighting the specific dangers of a site and arranging for individuals to be appropriately supervised.

Work Experience
Work experience is vital in helping young people make the right choices and realise their potential. Such experiences can be pivotal for deciding which career path to take and can be an important first step into the world of work. At Changing Education we understand the challenges faced by schools and colleges to encompass a "wider careers model" within their curriculum and the additional cost and resource this can incur.
Project-25
We're on a mission to engage with at-least 25% of the nations hardest to reach young people and match them up to an employer between 1-2 days per week for the whole academic year. In the UK, 35 students are permanently excluded from school every day and only 1% of those go on to achieve the requirement of 5 good GCSE's.
Technical Levels
T Levels are new courses coming in September 2020, which will follow GCSEs and will be equivalent to 3 A Levels. These 2-year courses have been developed to meet the needs of industry and prepare students for work. T Levels will offer students a mixture of classroom learning and 'on-the-job' experience during an industry placement of at least 45 days.
